Mountain Endurance Program Overview
Preparing for long days in the mountains requires more than just endurance training. The level of athletic ability is one of the biggest variables that determines success in the backcountry that can be controlled. All Mountain Endurance Programs follow evidence based training techniques to build tougher, faster and stronger athletes while helping to prevent injuries from overtraining.
Success on the trail and in the mountains depends on multiple factors:
- Aerobic Endurance
- Muscular Endurance
- Time/Duration: Is your body durable enough to stay moving for multiple hours/days? Muscle damage/fatigue are limiting factors to ultra endurance events
- Intensity: Train at the right intensity to develop the endurance you need for your goal.
- Terrain: Flat trails, rolling hills, sustained uphill
- Surface: Trail, off trail, 3rd class, 4th class, 5th class, rock, snow, ice, crevassed terrain
- Vertical Gain, Mileage and Grade
- Endurance Nutrition: Train the gut to manage gastrointestinal distress and manage energy depletion.
- Equipment/Pack Weight:
- Mental/Psychological:
- Flexibility: Having the ability to move without restriction is critical for all athletes. Lack of flexibility can cause imbalances that lead to injuries if uncorrected.
- Environment: Extreme heat, extreme cold, low/high humidity, wind, altitude.
